Transitional ACP banana quotas for new EU member states
31 January 2005
The adoption of a regulation fixing an additional import quota for ACP bananas for 2005 at 460,000 tonnes was announced by the EC on November 30th 2004. This is a transitional arrangement and will not prejudice the decision to move over to a tariff-only system in 2006. The new additional quotas will be dealt with under current licensing arrangements.
Editorial comment
This additional quota to banana exporters to take into account EU enlargement raises the question as to why a similar process of quota expansion has not been applied in the case of ACP sugar exporters.
