Poultry value chain/ Vanuatu - NARI supports Vanuatu poultry farmers
20 April 2015
The National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) empowered small-scale poultry farmers on Efate Island in Vanuatu through innovative agriculture by applying new and improved research-based technologies introduced by the Institute. According to NARI’s livestock scientist, farmers involved in the project expressed great satisfaction on the outcomes from the use of the technologies. Farmers observed general improvements on chicken production and spoke highly of the skills and support they are receiving and outcomes they are seeing in terms of increased egg production, chicken numbers and income. The initiative has helped rural households improve food and nutritional security by enabling local farmers produce their own chicken at village level to meet their protein and income requirements. Due to lack of domestic poultry industry for commercial egg and frozen chickens, most of the poultry products are imported mostly from New Zealand.
