Imports to meet a significant part of the increased EU biofuel demand
06 February 2008
Speaking in Germany in January 2008 Commissioner Fischer Boel noted that ‘imports and second-generation fuels would shoulder much of the burden of meeting the 10% target’ for biofuel consumption, with imports accounting for ‘20% of our biofuel needs in 2020’. It was felt, however, that this would mainly be imported from Brazil and Argentina.
Editorial comment
This cautionary note would suggest a need for ACP sugar sectors to focus on developing local demand for biofuels rather than aspiring to export to the EU.
