Debate on the new EU tariff rages

20 June 2005

Jamaican banana exporters are concerned about the apparent acceptance by their government of the current proposal for tariffs on bananas. In view of the competitive disadvantages that Caribbean producers face, the industry is of the opinion that the rate of euros 230 per tonne is too low. In contrast Latin American suppliers, particularly Ecuador, are likely to challenge the proposed tariff in the WTO, since they see it as too high.

Editorial comment

This debate will rage on, with investment in Caribbean banana production likely to suffer as a consequence of the uncertainty.
