According to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), there are seven positive cases of Foot and Mouth disease in the far North East of the Kavango region which is close to Angola. The outbreak spread further to Botswana even though measures are taken to control the disease. The source of the disease is thought to be caused by contact with wild animal species, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reported. The meat value chain is a multi-million dollar business which benefits Namibians living in rural areas and is a source of nutrition, food security and employment. Animal health is therefore a critical element in ensuring the long term sustainability of the chain.
