Dairy value chain/Kenya - Small holders from the Garissa County are calling for the establishment of a milk processing plant

10 March 2015

Garissa milk vendors want the Garissa county to create a partnership with the Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC) in order to establish a milk processing plant in the province. The processing plant will upgrade the quality of milk supplied by the vendors, of which the Garissa milk vendors contribute a total of 3% of the total milk consumed in Kenya. According to the vendor’s spokesmen, nearly 97% of the milk consumed in the county is raw product mainly from cow and camels. The plant will help to preserve the milk and reduce the post-harvest losses. Furthermore, the plant will offer and boost employment opportunities to youth while on the other-hand upgrade quality and increase earnings to milk vendors.
