On-going work by Heifer International on improving small-scale dairy in Tanzania receives a boost from Starbucks International

Ongoing work of Heifer International in partnership with ILRI under the “MaziwaZaidi” Project in some parts of Tanzania has motivated a US$ 750,000 grant from the Starbucks Foundation to fund the Mbozi Farmer Livelihood Improvement project. The funding will be directed towards improving livelihoods of 5,000 smallholder farmers in Tanzania by providing them with dairy cows and bulls to complement coffee farming. Farmers will receive training on proper dairy management and animal husbandry in addition the funds being used to establish a milk collection centre where farmers can sell their milk to large processors. Also, the fund will facilitate increased access to water, improve sanitation, as well as increase use of alternative sources of renewable energy. This funding is in recognition of the importance of enterprise diversification in ensuring resilience of livelihoods of farming communities.
