Rice value chain/Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Tanzania - Rice Farmers and Millers to benefit from CARI Initiative
More than 120,000 small rice farmers, millers and rural service providers from Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Tanzania will be beneficiaries of the Competitive African Rice Initiative (CARI) $3.3 million support. The support is aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of rice production in the regions. According to the CARI coordinator, the aim is to encourage effective coordination and linkages between the rice value chain actors to ensure quality rice supply as well as better returns to all the stakeholders. The initiative also aims to provide employment to rural farmers and youth as well as to support food security. Eventually, the Initiative targets at reducing rice imports in these countries. The local private sector in the respective countries will contribute 60% while the CARI will finance the remaining 40% in the project. Building of sustainable rice value chain with proper linkage to finance, modern technology and knowledge will help beneficiary countries to boost local rice production and meet the domestic market demand.
