Adaptation-support programme is signed in Barbados, but there is optimism in Fiji
01 September 2007
A financing agreement for the first tranche of sugar-sector adjustment support for Barbados has been signed, with initial funding focussed on assisting former sugar-sector workers. In Fiji optimism is expressed that by making better use of the whole cane for ethanol production and co-generation, continued sugar production can be profitable.
Editorial comment
With EC money coming on-stream political leaders are seeking to talk up the prospects of their own sugar sectors. It remains to be seen how in reality the impending shake up in ACP sugar production will pan out.
