CEMAC is to create a common market for sugar

According to press reports at a meeting from April 1st-12th 2005 in Douala, sugar-sector experts form CEMAC agreed on proposals to create a common sugar market. It was held that this would help to get to grips with problems created by increased legal and illegal imports. They called for protection of the local market from imports, the establishment of common standards and measures to ensure continued national production.

Central Africa is a major destination for EU refined-sugar exports, with central and west Africa receiving around 600,000 tonnes of refined sugar from the EU annually.
