The Dominican Republic begins sugar exports to the EU

05 November 2008

Press reports indicate the Dominican Republic has begun exporting sugar to the EU. ‘The first shipment of 12,000 tonnes of brown sugar has been sent to France and a second shipment of 20,000 tonnes destined for several European countries will arrive in November’. Industry representatives suggest that access granted under the Caribbean EPA ‘could eventually triple the country’s sugar exports’.

Editorial comment

The Dominican Republic along with low-cost LDC producers in Africa could be amongst the countries benefiting from the EPAs in the sugar sector, despite EU price reductions. However, this remains to be seen, with the level of global sugar prices and the US dollar-euro exchange rate having a critical bearing on the economic benefits derived from future access to the EU sugar market.
