Poultry value chain/ Jamaica - Precautionary measure against bird flu

14 May 2015

Members of the Veterinary Services Division (VSD) in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries embarked on a bird-trapping expedition with officers from the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), to test for the highly contagious virus which causes avian influenza, or bird flu. According to the VSD’s Chief Veterinarian, an extra precautionary measure for testing bird flu follows the decision to ban the importation of all poultry, poultry products and poultry by-products that are not fully cooked, as well as hatching eggs and pet foods originating from the United States of America and Canada. The testing took place in wetlands and other areas popular for nesting migratory birds from North America. Usually migratory birds flee the winter climes around October each year from North America, making the return trip about the end of March.
